Randall S. Stafford, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Stanford University Prevention Research Center. He has a Master’s degree in health administration (Johns Hopkins University), a PhD in epidemiology (UC Berkeley), an MD (UC San Francisco), and internal medicine training (Massachusetts General Hospital). His research mission is to improve population health outcomes through research that both informs the development and fosters the dissemination of effective, efficient, innovative, and evidence-based prevention interventions. Dr. Stafford’s research has led to more than 160 peer-reviewed articles, including many in high impact journals such as JAMA and NEJM. He served as a working group member for the AHA/ACC High Blood Pressure guidelines.

Desired Outcomes:

  • Assess conflicting guidelines and make decisions on which specific recommendations to put into clinical practice.
  • Integrate risk-based treatment principles (greater intensity of treatment for those patients with greater underlying risk) into strategies for patient care.
  • Identify the clinical sub-populations where findings from the SPRINT study are most applicable.
  • Provide guideline concordant care to their patients with high blood pressure.
