Up to 90% of all disease can be traced in some way back to the gut and health of the microbiome; More than 10,000 different microbe species have been identified living in the human body; There are 10 times as many outside organisms as there are human cells in the human body: The maternal microbiome is recognized as a key determinant of a range of important maternal and child health outcomes, and together with perinatal factors influences the infant microbiome. Dr. Douglas-Escobar will be presenting this activity on the Maternal-Fetal Microbiome.
Desired Outcomes:
- Strategies to protect and restore microbial diversity;
- Assess medical consequences of an altered microbiome;
- Discuss influences of the early establishment of the microbiome: Maternal-Fetal environment and Ex-Utero determinants.
