The American Heart Association released its most recent guidelines regarding the early management of Acute Ischemic Stroke at the International Stroke Conference in January 2018. The guidelines contain new recommendations on the evaluation and care of stroke patients in the emergency department. This presentation will review some of the new recommendations pertinent to the emergency department care of acute stroke patients, the recent clinical trials that these recommendations were based on and how the recommendations might change the way we care for our acute stroke patients in the emergency department.

Desired Outcomes:

  •  Identify the most recent guidelines on acute Stroke care
  • State how the recent recommendations might change our current practices in the emergency department
  • Cite relevant evidence based literature to support the new recommendations
