ARU Grand Rounds: Cancer Survivorship and Rehabilitation

Freewith Arash Asher, MD
Dr. Asher has a special interest in the physical and rehabilitative needs of cancer survivors who continue to experience the effects of their cancer or its treatment. Dr. Asher’s expertise is in the non-pharmacologic management of pain, cancer-related fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, neuropathy, exercise prescription for cancer patients, and the management other musculoskeletal problems.
Dr. Asher completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the UCLA/Greater Los Angeles VA, and a cancer rehabilitation fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Desired Outcomes:
- Appreciate the proposed pathophysiologic mechanisms behind cognitive dysfunction and cancer-related fatigue among cancer survivors;
- Understand mechanisms by which therapeutic exercise mitigates fatigue and possibly improves survival among cancer survivors;
- Recognize the different management principles between the negative and positive symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.
