OB Fellows Grand Rounds: A Reflection on Obstetric Opioid Prescription Practices
March 27, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
FreePresented by: Shelby L. Takeshita, MD
OPIOID USE HAS INCREASED NATIONWIDE, INCLUDING PREGNANT WOMEN AND WOMEN OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE. THE NUMBER OF OPIOID OVERDOSES AND RELATED DEATHS AMONG WOMEN HAS QUADRUPLED IN THE PAST DECADE. RECENT RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT THE OBSTETRIC POPULATION IS BEING PRESCRIBED AN EXCESS SUPPLY OF OPIOIDS WHICH IS LIKELY FUELING THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC.
Desired Outcomes:
- Understand how obstetric related opioid prescriptions affect patient outcomes.
- Review current literature evaluating current opioid prescribing practices.
- Discuss strategies that may decrease opioid use in the obstetric population.
