SUMMARY:PEDS Grand Rounds: East of Salinas – A Film by LAURA PACHECO & JACKIE MOW
DESCRIPTION:A Film by LAURA PACHECO & JACKIE MOW \nDiscussion Moderated by: Kristin Burstedt Leonard\, DO\, Family Practice Medicine\, NMC \nLocation:  S.E.A. Conference Room \n“East of Salinas takes us to the heart of California’s “Steinbeck Country\,” the Salinas Valley\, to meet a bright boy and his dedicated teacher — both sons of migrant farm workers. With parents who are busy working long hours in the fields\, third grader Jose Ansaldo often turns to his teacher\, Oscar Ramos\, for guidance. But Jose is undocumented; he was born in Mexico. Like many other migrant children\, he is beginning to understand the situation — and the opportunities that may be lost to him through no fault of his own. East of Salinas follows Jose and Oscar over three years: the boy is full of energy\, smarts\, and potential\, while his teacher is determined to give back to a new generation of migrant children.” \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nRecognize the challenges that migrant farm worker families in Salinas face in their daily lives.\nIntegrate this increased awareness into improved patient communication and realistic treatment plans.\n\nCME Activity Flyer – PDF

SUMMARY:How Far Have We Come? Emerging Therapies for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
DESCRIPTION:Scott G. Pritzlaff\, MDDepartment of Anesthesiology\, Perioperative and Pain MedicineInterventional Pain SpecialistStanford University School of Medicine\nSpeaker for this CME Activity:  Scott G. Pritzlaff\, MD \nLocation:  S.E.A. Conference Room \nFibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are often misunderstood conditions responsible for significant disability. It is critical for primary care and pain providers to have a sound understanding of the diagnostic criteria and treatment options for these patients. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nReview the epidemiology of fibromyalgia and other syndromes that may overlap.\nExplain the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia.\nDiscuss the etiology of chronic fatigue syndrome such as infection\, immune dysfunction\, endocrine-metabolic dysfunction\, depression.\nSelect appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments for fibromyalgia pain management and chronic fatigue syndrome.\n\nCME Activity Flyer PDF

SUMMARY:NMC Grand Rounds: Giving & Receiving Feedback
DESCRIPTION:Our CME Speaker is:  Brian M. Johnson\, MD\, \nAssociate Program Director\, Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency\, Martinez\, California\, Director\, UCSF Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship\, San Francisco\, California \nAll physician teachers constantly engage in giving and receiving feedback. It is one of the most important things we do in helping learners\, as well as a powerful way for us to grow as teachers.  This activity will facilitate a workshop designed to help us all get a bit better at these vital faculty skills. \n Desired Outcomes: \n\nDescribe the value feedback through the lens of learning trajectories\nDescribe the difference between formative and summative feedback.\nRecognize the ARTful and BEST frameworks for giving feedback.\nAsk for feedback (they actually want)\n\nCME Activity Flyer PDF

SUMMARY:Guillain-Barre Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:Sarada Sakamuri\, M.D. Associate Director\, Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology Stanford University School of Medicine\nPresented By:  Sarada Sakamuri\, M.D. \nLocation:  S.E.A. Conference Room \nGuillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and\, when severe\, the person is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening – potentially interfering with breathing and\, at times\, with blood pressure or heart rate – and is considered a medical emergency. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\n Understand the immunologic basis of GBS\nRecognize typical signs\, symptoms\, and laboratory and electrophysiological findings of GBS\nUtilize appropriate treatment and supportive care in patients with GBS\n\nCME Activity Flyer PDF

SUMMARY:Current Status of Advanced Hemodynamic Resuscitation and Management with Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS)
DESCRIPTION:Bialal M. Shafi\, MDCardiothoracic SurgeryPalo Alto Medical FoundationMedical Group\nSpeaker for this CME Activity:  Bialal M. Shafi\, MD \nLocation:  Natividad Conference Room \nThis presentation will explore the applications for adult ECLS including reversible respiratory failure\, cardiogenic shock\, and ECPR. The discussion will include the importance of early recognition and implementation\, and insight into the technical aspect on the use of extracorporeal life support along with risks\, benefits and outcomes. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nIdentify medical strategies that can potentially benefit patients who are in pulmonary and/or cardiac extremus.\nRecognize the selection criteria for determining candidacy for ECLS support.\nDefine the two types of ECLS: Veno-venous and Veno-arterial and their respective differences.\nDescribe best practices for basic medical management of the ECLS-supported patient.\n\nCME Activity Flyer PDF

SUMMARY:ARU Grand Rounds: Stroke Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Paul George\, MD\, PhDAssistant Professor of Neurology and\, by courtesy\, of Neurosurgery at the Stanford University Medical Center\nSpeaker for this activity:   Paul George\, MD\, PhD \nLocation:  Natividad Conference Room \nStroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States\, drastically disrupting the lives of stroke survivors and their caretakers. Unfortunately\, because of tight therapeutic time requirements\, the majority of stroke patients are not eligible for the current medicines or interventions. Current stroke recovery therapies remain limited. This lecture will address the gap between existing therapies and current research topics that may improve recovery for stroke patients. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nIncorporate investigative studies into improving stroke recovery with current stroke rehabilitation practices.\nIntegrate recent biotechnology and stem cell advances into current knowledgebase which may affect standard clinical practice for stroke patients in he future.\n\nCME Activity Flyer PDF \n
