Nassar\, MD\, MSc\, FRCSC\, FACS\, CHSE \nPrevention of Surgical Site Infections \nSurgical-site infections (SSIs) are known to complicate 2-5% of all surgeries in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has just issued updated evidence-based guidelines for SSI prevention. The guidelines cover 14 core areas and are intended to be incorporated into existing surgical quality improvement programs to maximize patient safety. As the number of US surgical procedures rise\, it is important for physicians to adhere to these guidelines to prevent SSIs. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nDiscuss basic principles of surgical site infections\nCite newer landmark studies on prevention of surgical site infections\nApply new guidelines for prevention of surgical site preventions into practice\nRecognize the importance of the contribution of patient and caregiver education to the outcome of the procedure\n\nGeared to Emergency Department Physicians\, Trauma Physicians\, OR Physicians\, Anesthesiologists\, Radiologists\, and ancillary clinical staff. \nCME Activity Flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:PEDS Grand Rounds: East of Salinas – A Film by LAURA PACHECO & JACKIE MOW
DESCRIPTION:A Film by LAURA PACHECO & JACKIE MOW \nDiscussion Moderated by: Kristin Burstedt Leonard\, DO\, Family Practice Medicine\, NMC \nLocation:  S.E.A. Conference Room \n“East of Salinas takes us to the heart of California’s “Steinbeck Country\,” the Salinas Valley\, to meet a bright boy and his dedicated teacher — both sons of migrant farm workers. With parents who are busy working long hours in the fields\, third grader Jose Ansaldo often turns to his teacher\, Oscar Ramos\, for guidance. But Jose is undocumented; he was born in Mexico. Like many other migrant children\, he is beginning to understand the situation — and the opportunities that may be lost to him through no fault of his own. East of Salinas follows Jose and Oscar over three years: the boy is full of energy\, smarts\, and potential\, while his teacher is determined to give back to a new generation of migrant children.” \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nRecognize the challenges that migrant farm worker families in Salinas face in their daily lives.\nIntegrate this increased awareness into improved patient communication and realistic treatment plans.\n\nCME Activity Flyer – PDF

SUMMARY:Guillain-Barre Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:Sarada Sakamuri\, M.D. Associate Director\, Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology Stanford University School of Medicine\nPresented By:  Sarada Sakamuri\, M.D. \nLocation:  S.E.A. Conference Room \nGuillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and\, when severe\, the person is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening – potentially interfering with breathing and\, at times\, with blood pressure or heart rate – and is considered a medical emergency. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\n Understand the immunologic basis of GBS\nRecognize typical signs\, symptoms\, and laboratory and electrophysiological findings of GBS\nUtilize appropriate treatment and supportive care in patients with GBS\n\nCME Activity Flyer PDF

SUMMARY:ARU Grand Rounds: New Blood Pressure Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:presented by Randall S. Stafford\, MD\, PhD \nRandall S. Stafford\, MD\, PhDDirector\, Program on Prevention Outcomes and Practices\, Stanford Prevention Research Center\, Professor of Medicine\, Stanford School of Medicine\nRandall S. Stafford\, MD\, PhD\, is a Professor of Medicine in the Stanford University Prevention Research Center. He has a Master’s degree in health administration (Johns Hopkins University)\, a PhD in epidemiology (UC Berkeley)\, an MD (UC San Francisco)\, and internal medicine training (Massachusetts General Hospital). His research mission is to improve population health outcomes through research that both informs the development and fosters the dissemination of effective\, efficient\, innovative\, and evidence-based prevention interventions. Dr. Stafford’s research has led to more than 160 peer-reviewed articles\, including many in high impact journals such as JAMA and NEJM. He served as a working group member for the AHA/ACC High Blood Pressure guidelines. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nAssess conflicting guidelines and make decisions on which specific recommendations to put into clinical practice.\nIntegrate risk-based treatment principles (greater intensity of treatment for those patients with greater underlying risk) into strategies for patient care.\nIdentify the clinical sub-populations where findings from the SPRINT study are most applicable.\nProvide guideline concordant care to their patients with high blood pressure.\n\nCME Activity Flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:Stop the Bleed
DESCRIPTION:presented by Andrew S. McCague\, DO\, FACOS\, FACS \nTrauma and Critical Care Surgeon\, Natividad Medical Center\nAmerican College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma determined that there may be a delay between time of injury and time first responder is on the scene. Without intervention by civilians\, preventable deaths will occur. Medical professionals need to know what civilians might do in instances of mass trauma; they must be exposed to this program to ensure appropriate care is delivered in the case where civilians have already initiated treatment. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nSave lives by utilizing tools to control life-threatening hemorrhage\, whether it is caused by unintentional injury\, crash\, violence or natural disaster;\nDiscuss the rationale for early use of a tourniquet for life-threatening extremity bleeding.\nDemonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg.\nDemonstrate the correct application of a topical hemostatic dressing (combat gauze).\nRecognize when a patient has been treated using the “Stop the Bleed” protocols and initiate further treatment appropriately.\n\nCME Activity Flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:When Physicians and Patients Disagree: What To Do?
DESCRIPTION:Bruce W. Spring\, MDClinical Assistant Professor of PsychiatryKeck School of Medicine of USC\npresented by Bruce W. Spring\, MD \nThe conflict between physicians and patients is a common practice experience for all physicians\, and one that can be very difficult and stressful for the physician and/or patient. This is a frequent occurrence in medical encounters\, and how well it is handled determines not only the clinical outcome of the visit but also impacts on the development of the clinician-patient relationship over time.   Physicians like to consider themselves as patient allies and advocates\, and it is difficult when they get into conflict with their patients. Most physicians have had relatively little training in effective ways to deal with conflict situations\, and tend to rely on whatever skills they have picked up over time. Physicians need an expanded set of communication tools to deal with situations of actual or potential conflict and disagreement between clinician and patient. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nIdentify the causes of conflict.\nUtilize evidence-based tools to defuse conflict situations with patients.\nTransform conflict situations into a sense of partnership and collaboration with patients.\nNavigate cultural and/or language barriers to improve communication with patients.\n\nCME Activity Fyer (PDF)
