SUMMARY:Trauma Grand Rounds: Catheter Related Infections
DESCRIPTION:Daniel B. DiGiulio\, MDClinical Instructor\, Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine\, Stanford University School of Medicine\nPresented By: Daniel B. DiGiulio\, MD \nCatheter-related infections cause a significant proportion of healthcare associated infections\, and are responsible for a substantial burden of disease in the US every year. Although urinary catheters and intravenous catheters might appear at first to have little in common with  each other\, both are artificial devices that can lead to iatrogenic complications\, particularly when catheters aren’t inserted and managed under optimal protocols. Various factors increase the risk of catheter-related infections\, including: 1) using invasive catheters when they’re not clearly indicated; 2) using suboptimal technique during their insertion and management; 3) leaving  catheters in place longer than necessary; and\, 4) failure to adequately monitor catheters for infectious complications. This presentation will discuss the problem of catheter-related infections\, and provide prevention and management strategies to minimize their occurrence and adverse health impact. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nState the appropriate indications for urinary catheter insertion\nKnow the daily steps to assess the ongoing need for urinary catheter continuation\nDiscontinue urinary catheters per catheter removal protocols\nIdentify risks for Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs)\nUnderstand the need to perform daily assessment of the ongoing necessity for central lines\nDiscontinue central lines when no longer necessary\nArticulate the critical role of proper hand hygiene before and after all patient contact\, as well as the use of Maximal Sterile Barrier Precautions when inserting central lines\nRecognize patient populations that are at increased risk for outcome disparities due to catheter-related infections\n\nCME Activity Flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:Stop the Bleed
DESCRIPTION:presented by Andrew S. McCague\, DO\, FACOS\, FACS \nTrauma and Critical Care Surgeon\, Natividad Medical Center\nAmerican College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma determined that there may be a delay between time of injury and time first responder is on the scene. Without intervention by civilians\, preventable deaths will occur. Medical professionals need to know what civilians might do in instances of mass trauma; they must be exposed to this program to ensure appropriate care is delivered in the case where civilians have already initiated treatment. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\nSave lives by utilizing tools to control life-threatening hemorrhage\, whether it is caused by unintentional injury\, crash\, violence or natural disaster;\nDiscuss the rationale for early use of a tourniquet for life-threatening extremity bleeding.\nDemonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg.\nDemonstrate the correct application of a topical hemostatic dressing (combat gauze).\nRecognize when a patient has been treated using the “Stop the Bleed” protocols and initiate further treatment appropriately.\n\nCME Activity Flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:Guillain-Barre Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:Sarada Sakamuri\, M.D. Associate Director\, Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology Stanford University School of Medicine\nPresented By:  Sarada Sakamuri\, M.D. \nLocation:  S.E.A. Conference Room \nGuillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and\, when severe\, the person is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening – potentially interfering with breathing and\, at times\, with blood pressure or heart rate – and is considered a medical emergency. \nDesired Outcomes: \n\n Understand the immunologic basis of GBS\nRecognize typical signs\, symptoms\, and laboratory and electrophysiological findings of GBS\nUtilize appropriate treatment and supportive care in patients with GBS\n\nCME Activity Flyer PDF
